Another Successful Year!

The 13th Annual Cesar Chavez Marcha was a success! We had an attendance of over 200 marchers that included organizations, elected officials, and other community members. Despite the heat, marchers made their way from Port & Agnes to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where they had a brief rest in the cool building. There, marchers listened as City Councilwoman Nelda Martinez recited the proclamation that was presented to the Committee from the City of Corpus Christi that stated March 31st, 2012, as the 13th Annual Celebration of Cesar Chavez Day. Shortly after our keynote speaker, Javier Colmenero, host of KUNO’s “Tu Voz” and former city council member, gave a great speech discussing the importance of making sure future generations learn about great leaders like Cesar Chavez.

From the church, marchers continued on to the Garcia Art & Education Center. The Veterans Band of Corpus Christi provided music as all the marchers gathered on the lawn of Antonio Garcia Park, directly beside the Garcia Center. Once all the marchers had gathered, the Veterans Band played the National Anthem and their color guard posted colors. Sonya Cortez, the Committee chair, then took the stage and announced the 2012 Marcha Sponsors (listed at the bottom of this page).  The Veterans band then honored military veterans.

Marchers gathered under the shade and enjoyed a lunch of chopped beef sandwiches while the talented ladies of Falcon Folklorico performed. Visit our Gallery to view photos from the March.

Thank you to all those that made this year’s march possible. See you next year!
